경동중고등학교는 1940년 3월 31일 '욱구공립중학교'로 설립이 인가되었으며, 1940년 4월 16일 개교하였다.
1945년 9월 28일 교명을 '경동공립중학교'로 개칭하여 1945년 10월 1일 개교하였다.
1951년 9월 1일 학제개편으로 경동고등학교와 돈암중학교로 분리되었다.
교훈은 ‘성심껏 배우자, 책임을 다하자, 나라를 빛내자’ 이며, 교목은 소나무, 교화는 무궁화이다.
