Harbour View

Harbour View is a site-specific audio/visual exhibition created by sound artist Chris Driedzic and photographer Graham Kennedy. Guided by your smartphone, this app takes the user on a 45-minute tour of downtown St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

The app leads the user to points on the map where the view of the St. John's harbour has been obstructed by urban development. Once arriving at these points the app plays a multimedia work which combines stop-motion photography and sound collage to capture the intangible beauty of the John's harbour.

Harbour View promotes reflection on the impact and meaning of progress. It asks the user to consider: What sights and sounds of the St. John’s harbour have been lost to development? How does our romanticized notion of historic spaces affect our views of urban growth? Is there a clash between this idea of the picturesque and the actual function of a working harbour?
