سيّدنا سليمان هو سليمان ابن النبي داود عليهما السلام، قد أرسل كلاهما لبنيّ إسرائيل، وتولّى سليمان الملك بعد وفاة والده الّذي كان عادلاً مع شعبه رحيماً بهم، ويحكم بينهم بما أمره الله. تابع سليمان عليه السلام الحكم على نهج والده، وبفضل الله كان قادراً على التحكّم بالكثير من المخلوقات والكائنات مثل الإنس والجن والطير والرياح والنحاس الذي يلين له. قال تعالى: {وَلِسُلَيْمَانَ الرِّيحَ غُدُوُّهَا شَهْرٌ وَرَوَاحُهَا شَهْرٌ ۖ وَأَسَلْنَا لَهُ عَيْنَ الْقِطْرِ ۖ وَمِنَ الْجِنِّ مَن يَعْمَلُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِ ۖ وَمَن يَزِغْ مِنْهُمْ عَنْ أَمْرِنَا نُذِقْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ السَّعِيرِ * يَعْمَلُونَ لَهُ مَا يَشَاءُ مِن مَّحَارِيبَ وَتَمَاثِيلَ وَجِفَانٍ كَالْجَوَابِ وَقُدُورٍ رَّاسِيَاتٍ ۚ اعْمَلُوا آلَ دَاوُودَ شُكْرًا ۚ وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِيَ الشَّكُورُ} [سبأ:12-13] كما علّم الله سليمان لغة الطيور والحيوانات، وسخّر له جيشاً عظيماً من الإنس والجن والطير، ممّا جعله دائم الشكر والذكر والاستغفار كثير الصلاة. ذات يوم كان سليمان يسير بجيشه من الجن والإنس، ويظلّه طيره من فوقه،

فسمع صوت نملة تقول لزميلاتها: {يا أيها النمل ادخلوا مساكنكم لا يحطمنكم سليمان وجنوده وهم لا يشعرون} [النمل:18] فتبسَّم سليمان من قول هذه النملة، ورفع يده إلى السماء داعيًا ربه شاكرًا له على هذه النعمة قال: {رب أوزعني أن أشكر نعمتك التي أنعمت عليَّ وعلى والدي وأن أعمل صالحًا ترضاه وأدخلني برحمتك في عبادك الصالحين} [النمل:19]. ذكاء سليمان عليه السلام منذ الصغر في أحد الايام عندما كان سليمان مع والده داود عليهما السلام جائهما رجلان يطلبان النظر في قضيتهما؛ حيث إنّ أحدهما كان يملك أرضاً فيها زرع والآخر راعياً للغنم، وقد دخل الغنم الأرض ليلاً، وأفسد ما فيها من زرع، فحكم داود لصاحب الأرض بالغنم تعويضاً عن الخسائر بعد أن تأكّد من صحة القصة من الراعي. لكنّ سليمان كان له رأي آخر استأذن والده به، وكان حكمه بأن يأخذ صاحب الغنم الأرض ليصلحها، ويأخذ صاحب الأرض الغنم لينتفع بلبنها وصوفها،

فإذا ما انتهى صاحب الغنم من إصلاح الأرض أخذ غنمه، وأخذ صاحب الحديقة حديقته. قال تعالى: {وداود وسليمان إذ يحكمان في الحرث إذ نفشت فيه غنم القوم وكنا لحكمهم شاهدين، ففهمناها سليمان وكلا آتينا حكمًا وعلمًا وسخرنا مع داود الجبال يسبحن والطير وكنا فاعلين} [الأنبياء:78-79( حرصه على الدعوة ونشر الدين (قصته مع سبأ) كان سليمان عليه السلام يتفقّد جنده عندما لاحظ غياب الهدهد دون علمه وإذنه، ممّا استدعى غضبه وقال {لأعذبنه عذابًا شديدًا أو لأذبحنه أو ليأتيني بسلطان مبين} [النمل:21] وقد جاء الهدهد بدليل قوي فأذهب عنه العذاب؛ حيث جاء بخبر سبأ ملكة اليمن {أحطت بما لم تحط به وجئتك من سبأ بنبأ يقين، إني وجدت امرأة تملكهم وأوتيت من كل شيء ولها عرش عظيم وجدتها وقومها يسجدون للشمس من دون الله وزين لهم الشيطان أعمالهم فصدهم عن السبيل فهم لا يهتدون} [النمل:22-24]. وذلك أحزنه فو لا يتوقّع أن يسجد أحد لغير الله؛ فأرسل برسالة إلى الملكة يدعوها وقومها إلى الدين الحق وعبادة الله وحده لا شريك له، وأرسلها مع الهدهد الّذي أوصلها للملكة دون أن يراه أحد، فقرأت سبأ الرسالة على مستشاريها وكانت الرسالة:{ إنه من سليمان وإنه بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم* ألا تعلو عليّ وأتوني مسلمين} النمل 30-31

. فسألتهم الرأي:{ أفتوني في أمري{ فأجابهم القوم:{ نحن أولو قوة وأولو بأس شديد والأمر اليك فانظري ماذا تأمرين{ وقالت بلقيس:{ إن الملوك إذا دخلوا قرية أفسدوها وجعلوا أعزة أهلها أذلة وخافت على قومها من حرب سليمان عليه السلام وقوة جيوشه، وأرسلت له الهدايا والكنوز من ذهب وأحجار كريمة لتختبر صدق دعوته، فإذا قبلها فهو راغب بالدنيا ولا حجة له عليها وإذا رفضها فهو نبي صادق، لا ضير بالذهاب له، إلّا أنّ رد سليمان كان {أتمدونني بمالٍ فما آتاني الله خير مما آتاكم بل أنتم بهديتكم تفرحون، ارجع اليهم فلنأتينهم بجنود لا قبل لهم بها ولنخرجنّهم منها أذلة وهم صاغرون} . فخرجت إليه بلقيس وقومها مسلمين، وعندما علم سليمان بقدومها أراد أن يبهرها بقدرة الله عزّ وجل، فطلب من معشره أن يحضروا له عرشها فتنافس بذلك الإنس والجن،

فكان الجن قادراً على إحضاره قبل أن يقوم سليمان من مجلسه، ولكن وزيره والّذي كان له علم بكتاب الله كان قادراً على أن يحضر العرش قبل أن تطرف عين سليمان، وصدق كلامه بإذن الله فهو عبد صالح ومؤمن، وفي لحظات كان عرش بلقيس أمامه....
و قد أنعم الله أيضاً على سليمان بعدد كبير من الخيل ليستخدمها في الجهاد في سبيل الله ،
