Book of Minor Prophets - They are Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi
The book of Minor Prophets plays a major part in the Old Testament of the Bible in the lives of the Jewish people. Although called ‘minor,’ it has nothing to do with the little or great role contributions of the prophets but it simply means few pages in the Old Testament of the Bible; whereas the Major Prophets have more pages and contents in the Bible. It wouldn’t be complete without the Major and Minor Prophets of God.
The book of Minor Prophets includes Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.
The book of Hosea has one of the unique perspectives revealing the heart of God as a Husband. Hosea was a prophet called by God to marry a harlot named Gomer. And his relationship as a faithful husband to an unfaithful wife is symbolic to God’s relationship with His chosen people, the Israel, being the faithful Husband to an unfaithful wife.
“Then said the Lord unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.” (Hos 3:1 KJV).
Among the Minor Prophets, the story of the prophet Jonah is among the most popular being told even up to these days especially with the children. Unlike most of the Prophets who obeyed God, Jonah went the opposite way because he did not want the city, Nineveh to be redeemed by God for he hated that city. And the prophet Jonah had the most extraordinary experienced of being tossed to the sea and swallowed by a big fish (Jonah 1 – 2).
And also, one of the most famous Prophets coming from the Book of Minor Prophets is Amos. Coming from the south of Jerusalem, God called him to prophesy to the people of Israel living in the north who were living unrighteous lives before God:
“Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes; That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name: And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.” (Amos 2:6-8 KJV).
The prophets in the book of the Minor Prophets all had their unique callings and purpose from God that without their surrendered lives and free will before God, the plan of redemption won’t be completed. From the nation of Israel until the grace period we are into today, these prophets had played such major and important role in the history of mankind.
