About Wine and Food road of Garda
The Wine and Food Road of Garda runs through the hinterland of the Lombard shore of Lake Garda, joining Limone with Pozzolengo and spreading into the areas of production of DOC Garda Classico, Lugana and San Martino della Battaglia.
Lonato, which develops on the hill peaks at the southern edge of the Valtenesi, has a long history borne out by rich architecture and prestigious institutions, like the Ugo da Como Foundation, which houses a library of 20,000 volumes, including antique books and rare editions. From here, through Calvagese della Rivera, tourists can reachPolpenazze, in the heart of the Valtenesi, which is the wine production centre of the south-western shore of Lake Garda. There are numerous attractions along the way: from the 9th-century Church of San Pietro in Lucone of Polpenazze to the 11th-century Castle of Soiano and the remains of a pile-dwelling village in the area of the Sovenigo lakes. Unmissable, at Gardone Riviera, is the Vittoriale degli Italiani, the museum-house of Gabriele D'Annunzio.
Other obligatory visits are the Sanctuary of Montecastello in Tignale, the splendid town of Salò, the Rocca di Manerba, the peninsula of Sirmione with the remains of the Villa of Catullus, and, again atSirmione, the Rocca Scaligera. Also famous and a "must see" is San Martino della Battaglia, with its Torre Sacrario, inaugurated in 1893 to commemorate the victory of the Piedmontese and the French over the Austrians in 1859.
