O Antigo Testamento ou Velho Testamento, também conhecido como Escrituras Hebraicas, tem 46 livros e constitui a primeira grande parte da Bíblia cristã, e a totalidade da Bíblia hebraica. Foram compostos em hebraico ou aramaico.

Chama-se também Tanakh, acrônimo lembrando as grandes divisões dos escritos sagrados da Bíblia hebraica que são os Livros da Lei (ou Torá), os livros dos profetas (ou Nevi'im), e os chamados escritos (Ketuvim). Entretanto, a tradição cristã divide o antigo testamento em outras partes, e reordena os livros dividindo-os em categorias; Lei, história, poesia (ou livros de sabedoria) e Profecias.

O Antigo Testamento trata basicamente das relações entre Deus e o povo Israelita. Existem vários nexos temáticos entre os livros de acordo com suas divisões (seja a cristã ou a hebraica). Única entre essas tradições é a primeira divisão, a Torá ou Pentateuco, que trata da história sagrada do povo de Israel, a partir da criação do mundo até a ocupação da Terra, passando pela legislação litúrgica e religiosa. Tradicionalmente, a Torá ou Lei é atribuída a Moisés e, depois de sua morte, terminada por Josué; porém, muitos autores defendem que a formação da Torá foi um processo longo passando por diversos grupos de autores até sua adoção uniforme pós-exílica.

Composições
Diferentes tradições cristãs possuem um diferente cânone para o Antigo Testamento. A Igreja Católica Romana utilizou , a partir do século I, como canônica a versão chamada Septuaginta, que foi uma tradução dos escritos hebraicos para o grego, feita antes mesmo do fechamento do cânone hebraico na tradição judaica. Assim, a Septuaginta inclui material que não foi incluído na Bíblia Hebraica, de fontes diferentes e divergentes, inclusive material original já escrito em grego. Os defensores da reforma protestante excluíram do cânone todos os livros ou fragmentos que não correspondiam ao texto hebraico massorético, e como resposta a isso o Concílio de Trento em 1546 determinou que os livros de Judite, Tobias, Sabedoria, Eclesiástico, Baruc, 1° Macabeus e 2° Macabeus, os capítulos 13 e 14 e os versículos 24 a 90 do capítulo 3 de Daniel, os capítulos 11 a 16 de Ester (todos existentes em língua grega) deveriam ser tratados como canônicos, ao passo que os textos conhecidos como oração de Manassés e os livros de 3 e 4 Esdras não mais o seriam. A Igreja Católica Ortodoxa acabou por decidir pela inclusão de Tobias, Judite, Sirácida e Sabedoria.

Em outras tradições cristãs existe mais material adicional, como por exemplo na Bíblia Etíope e na Bíblia Copta. A tradição reformada optou por seguir o cânone estabelecido pela tradição judaica, porém mantendo a diferente ordem dos livros. Holy Bible - Old Testament or Old Testament

The Old Testament or the Old Testament, also known as the Hebrew Scriptures, has 46 books and is the first major part of the Christian Bible, and the entire Hebrew Bible. They were composed in Hebrew or Aramaic.

It is also called Tanakh, acronym recalling the great divisions of the sacred writings of the Hebrew Bible which are the books of the Law (or Torah), the books of the prophets (or Nevi'im), and so-called writings (Ketuvim). However, the Christian tradition divides the Old Testament elsewhere, and reorders the books dividing them into categories; Law, history, poetry (or wisdom books) and Prophecies.

The Old Testament is basically the relationship between God and the Jewish people. There are several thematic links between the books according to their divisions (whether Christian or Hebrew). Unique among these traditions is the first division, the Torah or Pentateuch, which deals with the sacred history of Israel, from the creation of the world to the occupation of the Earth, through the liturgical and religious law. Traditionally, the Torah or Law is attributed to Moses, and after his death, completed by Joshua; however, many authors argue that the formation of the Torah was a long process through different groups of authors to their post-exilic uniform adoption.

Different Christian traditions have a different canon to the Old Testament. The Roman Catholic Church used from the first century, as canonical version called the Septuagint, which was a translation of the Hebrew scriptures into Greek, made even before the Hebrew canon lock in the Jewish tradition. So the Septuagint includes material that was not included in the Hebrew Bible, different and divergent sources, including original material already written in Greek. Supporters of the Reformation excluded from the canon all the books or fragments that did not correspond to the Masoretic Hebrew text, and in response to this the Council of Trent in 1546 determined that Judith books, Tobit, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees, chapters 13 and 14 and verses 24-90 of chapter 3 of Daniel, chapters 11-16 Esther (all existing in Greek) should be treated as canonical, while the texts known as prayer Manasseh and the books of Ezra 3:04 no longer be. The Orthodox Catholic Church ultimately decided by the inclusion of Tobit, Judith, Sirach and Wisdom.

In other Christian traditions there is further material, such as the Bible and the Bible Ethiopian Coptic. The Reformed tradition has chosen to follow the canon established by Jewish tradition while retaining different order of books.
