La Biblia Reina Valera también llamada Biblia del Oso, lleva ese nombre porque en el dibujo de la tapa había un oso intentando alcanzar un panal de miel de abeja. Fue traducida al español en 1569 por Casiodoro de Reina, un religioso de origen protestante y luego publicada por Cipriano de Valera,
quien hizo una revisión exhaustiva para publicarla en 1602. Le dedicó 20 años de su vida y realizó un excelente trabajo.

Si bien era la misma Biblia por todos conocida, sobretodo en los medios cristianos derivados del protestantismo, el lenguaje original provenía del español antiguo.

Para el año 1946 la Sociedad Bíblica Americana y la Sociedad Bíblica Británica y Extranjera consideraron las sugerencias que les habían hecho sobre la necesidad de una revisión de la Biblia, ya que la consideraban muy anticuada, en cuanto a la gramática y la expresión.

Se buscó producir una versión que conservara la belleza de la Valera de 1569, pero que exhibiera el idioma y la ortografía prescrita por la Real Academia Española, autoridad primaria en materia del idioma.

Hoy, la versión de 1960 se considera la más usada por los creyentes que buscan la Palabra de Dios. Y aunque hay revisiones más actuales, sigue siendo la preferida por los predicadores.
