Road accident not only takes lives, or leaves people injured, it fades away the future of victims’ families as well. Every year thousands of road accidents taking thousands of lives and keeping more injured. According to BRAC road safety database, in 2014, 1817 road accidents took 2351 lives leaving more 5408 people injured. In 2015, the number of road accident was 2001 which took 2562 lives and left more 5707 injured.

The above statistics are based on media reporting. There are lot more accidents which don’t get media attention, but still has the same potential to be a deadly one. In our 1 on month observation, we have found, that more than 600 people got injured just in Dhaka city due to unmarked speed breaker, Pot hole and risky point.

Many of the above 600 accidents can be avoided if the roads were safer or people know where the risky spots are. We have found that the major victims of these accidents are cyclists, bikers and rickshaw passengers.

Here comes the idea, BRAC advocacy for social change has developed “Road Safety Dhaka” App in collaboration with BDCylists, the largest cyclists’ community in Bangladesh.The target app users are cyclists and bikers in Dhaka City.

With this road safety app, everyone with an android phone can become a road safety change maker. The app user can report unmarked speed breaker, pot hole and also marked a resolved issue as safe with location information and photo. The verified report will be shown on the app map. Also, there will be a statistics box which will tell how many “pot holes” and “unmarked bumps” have been marked and how many of them have been resolved done during the last week and moth.

Both the map and statistics will be shown on app and our official live dashboard on www.roadsafetydhaka.net .

Map icons meaning:

Purple color icon = Your Location

Blue icon = Pot Hole

Yellow icon = Unmarked speed breaker/ Unmarked Bump

Green icon = Resolved issue

This app and live dashboard will bring the all the risky zones (pot hole, unmarked bump) in Dhaka City in your palm literally. Also, an app user can set alert and distance on the app setting option which will enable alert if there is any risky spot nearest him/her.

We are hopeful that this road safety app and live statistics with help the Government to make our roads safer. Initially, we are piloting this app for Dhaka North and South City Corporation. After successfully completing this, we’re hopeful to go for all districts in Bangladesh.
