BBC News for Android
As far as news apps go best Ive used. I include in that calculation the content offered. App itself used to be horrible, but improved significantly. Now it's better than the browser, which should be expected. Special mention for the well designed and easily tailorable "personalized page" via topic (or other criteria). Great to be able to avoid all the "news" you insist in putting in the news section. I give it full stars for being an app with few flaws (all apps are flawed, some still should be 5/5. So relative to the majority of apps this has less relevant flaws and annoying bugs) and for offering (relatively) unbiased high quality news and analysis. Despite budge cuts bbc seem to have kept good standards for international news (and to repeat myself, isnt clearly a politicaly motivated publication. Looking at you CNN, which I still recall once being prestigious and reliable).
Application fails every time I try to play a BBC video. BBC News is decent and way less biased than American. Since app failures I have discovered Al Jazeera which is surprisingly good.
A very nice format to be able to get a good overview of the breaking news. Of course like no news outlet completely non opinion based, however since the latest update every time I try to open videos of the day and some other video clips my phone immediately crashes.
I do so enjoy this app, but recently, it keeps crashing and about half the time the video's do not work. It's only good for the updates, as checking the mobile website is more functional and effective.
I'm impressed by the possibility of getting news reports on the regional basis. I'm not sure if you have a menu for accessing reports about past events either by subject or timing. For instance I think there was news about a pyramid that was discovered recently in Egypt, which I believe you reported on, but I don't know how to get it now on your site.
Deleting widget (3/30/17 update) not good. It had problems like repeatedly regurgitating old news but was reasonably useful. Improve and restore widget please
I am an American, and BBC has recently become my primary news source, as it offers the most unbiased reporting I have encountered. They tell you what happened, not what you should think about it, with an occasional lovely dry (British?) humor bleeding through. I can customize my settings so that articles regarding the issues or regions most important to me are most easily accessible. The reporting on American affairs is in-depth. My only suggestion is that a "night" mode (with dark background and light text) would be a useful setting for all articles, to save battery life when I'm spending a lot of time catching up on news. Also the ability to open multiple tabs, as articles often very helpfully reference previously-published articles on the same event, or related news items, and it is tedious to go back and find the links that interested me after I've finished reading the original article.
Deleted app. I love bbc news but current version is not working for me. "An error occured"... and it tries to load but nothing happens. Does this on wifi and 4g.
One day stopped working. Now I must install and reinstall after just a couple of days because always stops working. Also can't find a simple article search function (????)
Why have you removed the stacked cards widget? That was the best one by far. Also, the ads load slower than the stories and spoil the experience.
My go to news site, however, frequent typos are distracting. Also crashes at the end of videos. Would also prefer if vids only viewable on bbc vid app were flagged so i could avoid wasting the time spent clicking through.
Very bad app, Everytime there is a short interruption in the internet connection, the radio stops playing. Really annoying to have to restart it over and over again when jogging or biking...
One of the best sources but very stingy with video. They operate around the globe but block video outside the UK. I post a link and then discover that it has video that no one can watch. It's stupid, especially for a non-commercial channel.
More often than not, the personalosed menu bar does not appear in the app and I have to reinstall it to get it back. A right pain!
BBC is the most reliable news source next to Reuters. They're not perfect, but are obscenely classy, journalism wise. And this app is great. I would prefer a bigger widget.
Great app, but a bit buggy. It crashes quite often - mostly when I watch videos. No other apps crash on my phone.
Works well, though resource heavy; uses lots of ram. Decent global news coverage, but only news, little analysis, which is otherwise a prime reason to read BBC.
Too many ads for the news. Half of the "news" is just twitter posts of blindingly stupid people's reactions to events, which isn't news. This app is still steadily going downhill.
Love the app. Love the widget exactly what needed for news widget couldn't find with any other news app's widget. Can make it full screen and shows multiple stories with scroll. Made it my right swipe news feed home screen. Thanks
Opinions and news articles are most of times biased or presented in a way to lead towards a view. Many foreign correspondents do not have independent views.
especially when Russia is involved,as you only get the American /British version of events. also install sputnik news for balance.
Pretty good. Only issue is that sometimes the widgets get stuck and you end up opening a story from weeks ago instead of the one you clicked on
It's a good app. Saddly it crashes way too often. Plus some videos don't work even with the bbc video player
This a great app as it provides you with a good cross-section of foreign news unlike our local newspapers which are parochial in their lead news stories. However, I do miss the offline reading of news stories in the current app. I would appreciate you providing this offline reading facility in future versions of this app. Great work by the developers and thanks to your news journalists.
This was my favorite news app until the latest update. Now the articles no longer update in the background even though I tinkered with the settings, and therefore I can't read it when I'm on the subway, where I spend two hours per day. I also preferred the old layout. It was easy to navigate and to see an array of stories at a glance and choose the ones that interested me. I'm disappointed. I just want a news source whose primary goal is to communicate the news clearly and without bias to the readers. I would have given the previous version 5 stars.
Very biased and sloppy reporting. Reports appear to be written hastily due to the numerous spelling and grammatical errors seen very often. Very left, and picky about what is reported. The app itself is a good program. EDIT: The reporting doesn't cover many major stories in the US and covers small ones. Curious. And the 'rushed' style of errors is getting worse.
You guys stole my loved Widget with the the last update?!?! WHY?? Can't truly be because of storage you save with spare it out. I really like this app and would recommend it anyone, but one star anyways to get my widget back ;((
Some of the ads are still flashing intrusively, and they're up to 30 seconds long. Judging by the app reviews, investing a little in addressing technical hiccups would improve your customer service. This is because of your less-biased, concise and informed content. For now, it's two stars: please reel in the advertising.
For the past month or 2 I have not been able to get any news whatsoever! It keeps coming up with an error while also reminding me that they're working on fixing it. I've missed too many important news because of this so please fix ASAP so that I don't have to change to CNN's app.
Lately 2 of 5 times I hit an article the wrong one opens. e.g. just now, tried to read about unexpected benefits of New Zealand eartquake, the app constantly brings up an article about giraffes... very annoying.
Good source of news. I won't give it five stars because 1) it is very slow on my Samsung 6310 sometimes it just hangs on loading a full article; 2) the font that I get is very thin so that it lacks contrast with the background - even the large font. 3) on my small screen the swipe often changes the tab rather than showing me more news; 4) you cannot remove options for video even if you are offline, or using it abroad.
Easy to use, can be tailored to the news you'd like to follow. Great that these topics also update with new events in the world. Sometimes the writing is sloppy grammatically, I don't personally enjoy the critical analyses and expert opinion that are interspersed throughout the story.
Used to be a good new app but the video feature no longer works properly and they steer you into their garbage app instead of allowing you to view the video online! They steer you to their app for adverts, what use to make BBC great!! BOOOO YOU GAVE INTO THE WESTERN scam. Shame on you.
App was pretty decent. News updates were fast although hastily written sometimes. Best thing was the widget that updated in the background and can be used to scroll through headlines from your home screen. Devs removed the one thing that I felt made the app stand out. Really foolish move. Giving 1 star for such a senseless action.
It was good but now there are full screen ads and ads on every single page it is not enjoyable anymore. Also full screen ads App no longer remembers which tab you are on so also go back to top news not my news. Now inserting videos on the news list no way to disable them. No longer a good app for usability.
Love the worldwide coverage. I share many posts on FB. I like the new look. But...but the video throws errors. Sometimes the syringe starts unintended play. The refresh is not good. The language and grammer that was the shining standard, are not up to part. At times the stories seem biased. Still by far the best!
The update of July 2015 is not easy to navigate. The previous version was much better. This version suffers from featuritis. I liked what was before, but cannot navigate easily in this version. I also do not like the intrusive ads. You guys have screwed up,what a pity.EDIT APR 2017....Now it bombs on my Samsung J5.
I'm a headline scanner and it's my favorite. It works very well on my Samsung S6. As a comparison the Freep app loads much more poorly.
The articles are often opinionated, not objective. The app sucks battery power like there's no tomorrow, and the stack widget has glitches, getting stuck part way through transitions of articles.

Ads are triggering without clicking... It's enough that you just touch them, and they are half the screen size... Makes scrolling difficult.
