We’ve developed the BBC Media Player app to improve video streaming playback on Android devices. You’ll need to install this separately from the Google Play Store.

To make installation of the BBC Media Player as easy as possible, BBC iPlayer will prompt you to install it when you first play a streamed programme.

The BBC iPlayer app uses standard Android app permissions that are defined by the Google Android platform. The permissions the BBC iPlayer Android app asks to use are:

Photos/Media/Files

"Read the contents of your USB storage" & "Modify or delete the contents of your USB storage"
This permission is used to store downloaded programmes. The application must be able to write, read and delete these files.

Device ID & Call Information

"Read phone status and identity"
This permission is used to read the Android "Device ID". This is an anonymous ID that cannot be used to identify the user and is not used to track the user. It is used by iPlayer's content protection system to ensure that downloaded programmes can only be played on the device that downloaded them. iPlayer does not use this permission to determine the device phone number, whether a call is active, or the remote number in a connected call.

Other permissions (not explicitly mentioned when installing BBC iPlayer, as they are more general to most apps):

"Prevent phone from sleeping"
This permission is used by two features: Downloads & Chromecast.
While downloading a programme, the application prevents the system from sleeping when the device is locked, so the download can continue. This is only active while a download is in progress.

While "casting" a programme to a compatible receiver like Google's Chromecast, the application stops the system from fully sleeping when the phone is locked. This stops the application losing connection with the receiver so the phone can continue to control playback.

"Full network access"
iPlayer needs access to the internet to download programmes, schedules and information about programmes and configuration, and to send usage statistics.

"View network connections"
This permission lets iPlayer determine whether a network connection is available before accessing the network, and provide better error messages when it can’t retrieve data.

iPlayer also determines what type of network connection is in use (Wi-Fi or Cellular) for the Downloads feature. Downloads are enabled when connected to a Wi-Fi network. On a cellular network, downloads are disabled/paused.

"Test access to protected storage"
This allows the app to check if there is space on your device to download programmes.

"Pair with Bluetooth devices"
This allows the app to stream audio via connected Bluetooth devices.

To give you the best experience, certain details like your Search History and Added programmes may be stored on your device or securely on BBC servers.

To analyse and improve the app, it also uses technologies similar to performance cookies used by the BBC. You can alter your settings for this on your device. What are users saying about BBC iPlayer

I like this app I only wish you could choose between downloading via Wi-Fi and mobile data so I can download out and about. Good selection of shows, not a fan of all the details you need.

J70%
by J####:

Why can't I store downloads on my sd card? Without this I run out of storage too easily. It spoils a good app.

H70%
by H####:

One word HORRENDOUS I mean I don't know why they did that account thing when u have kid iplayer

F70%
by F####:

Great app but assistant doesn't recognise bbc iPlayer so "watch EastEnders" plays random clips on YouTube , very frustrating

S70%
by S####:

Just a real painful experience to use, plus what is all this sign in rubbish about if not marketing

S70%
by S####:

It's great I can access all my favourite shows really easily

B70%
by B####:

I like this app because it lets you catch up on TV shows and see what you've missed

S70%
by S####:

Turned from GOOD to BAD. Programmes that have expired are still on there and can be watched but half way through it it cuts off....

J70%
by J####:

Bad app. Has always been clunky but has become almost unusable. Really frustrating.

S70%
by S####:

All way logging me out just gsign back in and straight away is locked me out

S70%
by S####:

The app kills my phone battery even when I'm not using it.

S70%
by S####:

Fabulous use it all the time. Download option is a must ????????

S70%
by S####:

Government propaganda, and as such probably violates Google's T&Cs

S70%
by S####:

Casting is awful, buffering all over the place

S70%
by S####:

What a stupid way to organise the winter olympics coverage. Surely it would make sense to organise it by sport and not as you have done in 4hr sections. We are left searching through for the sport we wish to see and end up jumping ahead of the start and ruining the result if you go to far. Once again the BBC doesn't think about its viewers, only it's self.

S70%
by S####:

Used to work really well. The last few days however, it has been terrible. Does not load live streams, very frustrating during the winter Olympics. I have reinstalled the app but this has not worked. I have noticed I am not the only user that is suffering with this poor service.

D70%
by D####:

Need some support please - I've had no problems with the app before today but now it is completely dead. When I try to open it I get a black screen only. I have tried uninstalling and clearing data and there is no change. Would really love to get back into the app to watch the Olympics!

J70%
by J####:

App was perfectly fine yesterday night. Today now every time I try to open the iPlayer it just brings up a black screen. Cannot do anything with the app & have tried to reinstall but no use. Will change rating once resolved

S70%
by S####:

I now have to download a separate program to watch content? Bloat my phone with more software. Thanks. Why now do I need to use one whole program to browse, where I used to be able to watch video, to then open a completely different program to watch? The whole point of the iPlayer is to watch it on the iPlayer! Low rating until I can go back to using one program, and stop being penalised for watching on a mobile device.

A70%
by A####:

Used to be good. Now I can't get past a black screen and a message saying it is unavailable. It's been like that for over a month. Yes and my license fee which never goes down pays for a reduction in quality.

K70%
by K####:

So badly designed. I want to watch other episodes in a series. Does it have a nice drop down menu for the eisopdes? No. Just randomly puts them all over a page with episodes from other series. And doesnt even label them so you can find the next eispode. Seriously who designed this app. Completely useless interface.

S70%
by S####:

Downloads now work for secondary users so the app is suddenly usable and I like it! Thanks :). Hope the same can fix be done for iPlayer radio app but not as important as this one

B70%
by B####:

I never leave reviews. Downloaded this to watch the winter Olympics. All I can say is don't waste your time with this app or any of the BBC coverage of the Olympics. You can pick which sport you want to watch can only re-watch there day coverage which jumps around to all different sports that you don't get to see the end of so you never see who wins

THE BBC I PLAYER APP HAS GONE FROM BEEN THE BEST CATCH UP TV APP IN THE UK. TO THE WORST CATCH UP TV APP IN THE UK. THE BBC AND THE APP DEVLOPERS NEED TO READ THE REVIEWS OF THE I PLAYER APP IN THE PLAY STORE. AND A FEW MONTHS AGO THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE BBC SAID HE WANTED THE BBC I PLAYER APP TO BE THE NUMBER ONE CATCH UP TV APP IN THE UK. THE APP WAS GREAT BEFORE THE BBC AND THE APP DEVLOPERS STARTED MESSING AROUND WITH IT EARLIER THIS YEAR. I..E. HAVEING TO SIGN IN. THE LAYOUT OF THE APP. AND THE APP IS RUNNING WAY SLOWER THAN IT USE TO. WHEN AN APP IS GOOD PLEASE DON'T MESS ABOUT WITH IT. BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOW RUINED WHAT WAS AN EXCELLENT APP. SPEAKING FOR MY SELF I WILL NOT BE USEING THE BBC I PLAYER APP AGAIN. BECAUSE THE BBC AND THE APP DEVLOPERS HAVE RUINED IT..

S70%
by S####:

Why am I being forced to download the "BBC Media player" app to watch videos when yesterday they worked fine. Not only are you making me install an extra app for no reason, that app actually works worse. It has not been updated to properly support the screen of the Pixel 2 XL so plays the video off centre. The iPlayer app handled this fine. Playback through Media Player is also slower and buffers frequently. I won't be using it again until you put playback back into the native apps.

N70%
by N####:

The app is meant to support downloads of your fave shows so you can watch on the go but every time I try to download an episode it fails! I've redownloaded the app a couple of times and followed suggestions on BBC website but still it doesn't work!

E70%
by E####:

Since WHEN does one need to submit all one's personal details just to use a service that we have already paid for? I do not often use this service already and now I have an excellent reason to NOT use it. And a good reason to complain about the tv licence fee as well.

H70%
by H####:

Once most preferrable app than any other channel ... sadly doesnt work and hasn't for some time now don't bother installing until you see a good review from a samsung user.

X70%
by X####:

Its a good app but when you come out of it by accident it looses where you are. You can only watch shows ofline by downloading them . But overall its an amazing app that i would definetly recomend

S70%
by S####:

Today's update deleted all my downloads. It would be great if it came with a warning it was going to delete them, so I could download again before leaving home. Hoping they've at least fixed the poor bookmarking so episodes pick up where I left off, rather than at some random point.

U70%

I hate constantly signing in and don't understand why I have to. However the crashes have stopped and it works fine

Z70%
by Z####:

Having turned off downloads ages ago as they stopped working I welcomed this new version which said it fixed downloads, but now I don't get the option to download programs and the download tab has disappeared from the menu!!!!

F70%
by F####:

This app just got worse and worse! But now its better! Yay!

S70%
by S####:

The cast feature does not work, tried to cast from two different devices (Samsung tablet and Oppo phone) with the same result. When you connect, the TV does display the BBC logo with the words 'Ready to cast', but when you press play nothing happens!

J70%
by J####:

I use to always be on the iPlayer but the last few weeks, I have been stuck signed in on all of my devices with no sign out system due to a "technical difficulty" and no updated personalised recommendation and continue watching thing, can someone please help me? I really would appreciate it because I am not sure if I am able to remember what day of the week each programme is on!

S70%
by S####:

BBC iPlayer "support" is totally useless!!! Perhaps take a look at my tickets and emails, before meaningless reply. Also cast option not working from mobile app on Sony XZ android 8.0.0 to Samsung D6530 / H6700 / M5520 TV's

H70%
by H####:

I don't like being told I can't download unless I'm on an Access point. ... It's my mobile data ..its a mobile phone....not a Video recorder stuck in a room.... Sort it out !!!!! It's now Dec 2015 and it's still not fixed sort it out !!!!! It's 2018 now and still not fixed get your act together !!!

Brilliant app, does exactly what I want and I've had no issues for almost 3 year's from the bbc I player. Definitely deserves it's 5 star's...!

S70%

Full of scumbags. Send people to knock on your door at 9pm on a school night, with a toddler in bed. Scum. Keep sending them they will be told to get to f**k, no matter who they are. Shocking practise. Because I have a Tele I must be watching the BBC? No, I watch nothing but netflix, YouTube, 4od etc. Not the p**h they put on BBC. Go f**k yourselves.

N70%
by N####:

Hate the new layout where you have to scroll horizontally and can't see the whole page of results per group. Makes me go to netflix instead out of frustration
