About Aussie Bird Count

BirdLife Australia has created the Aussie Backyard Bird Count app for you to take part in Australia’s first nationwide bird survey. For one week each year near the end of October, as part of National Bird Week, join thousands of people as they get to know their local birds and help us discover how our birds are getting on. It only takes 20 minutes in your backyard, neighbourhood park, or favourite green patch to be a part of this exciting event.

All you have to do is sign-up with your name and email address, select your location on the map, and start counting. If you need help identifying birds, use the handy built-in Field Guide. While there are around 800 species of birds in Australia, the Field Guide holds just under 400 species. Try to be as general as possible when searching or typing in bird names to get the best results.

Don’t go away when the Bird Count has finished. You can use the Field Guide year round to learn more about your feathered friends.

The app worked perfectly during the count period, but now it can't access the internet to load the location map. What has happened? The app encouraged me to continue counting but it's now impossible to do that.

The timer doesn't seem to work properly. My 20 minutes went for about an hour. I think the timer stops when the phone goes to sleep. Also can't locate where I am. But the bird list is very user friendly. Hopefully the bugs will be ironed out for next year

An extra star for sterling intentions. All else unworkable. Please include comprehensive conventional guide.

It's an interesting app. But I looked what has been submited for my area and there are birds listed that you don't find in NSW let alone this area. People aren't very good at identifying birds.

Would be good to be able to go direct to bird guide without having to keep skipping thru size shape etc. A lot of people know the birds name just want to confirm by going directly to the listing in the guide.

I was almost finished my 20 minutes, but then couldn't think of the name of a bird I saw. I tried using your field guide but couldn't find it so decided I'd do a quick Google. Only problem was I then couldn't go back to my count on your app. It sent me back to start again. I had maybe a minute left. Given it's already late dusk on the last day of the count this means I don't get to participate this year. Please fix this for next time.

Added my list, my time counted down. At time zero o couldn't seem to do anything else. Nothing happened when I touched any button. Was my list submitted? No idea. Also couldn't access the 'attached bird list'

What a fun way to contribute to the research! It does need time to find your location so you need to have your GPS on at least 5mins or more before starting the birdcount. Not sure if you need to also have WiFi access to see map with location. (Nexus 7 2013)

No apparent way to edit a checklist. Might have been a grey teal instead of a chestnut teal, but that's now locked in. It needs a smarter database that doesn't need 'Australian' and 'common' in front of the most frequently used bird names. The app's way too big! Please consider those of us with crap phones whose memory space is exhausted even after moving all possible apps to SD. All this hassle just to share the excitement of having spotted an Eastern Spinebill for the first time here....

Can't browse bird details without being in survey or results, and clicking on a species doesn't show me details.

Z70%

Great app. It would be good if you could get a photo of a bird when you search for it by species name, before you have to add it to your list. A social networking plug-in that allowed you to share your sightings might also be a neat feature. :)

It's a great idea. But the thumbnails are very small and so it's difficult to correctly identify a bird unless you already know what it is. This makes it less interesting for kids. Also : why no seagulls?!

A nice way to spend 20 minutes. I'm calling bs on the person who reckons they saw an Albert's Lyrebird in 4305 though!

Really good app. I used a field guide which I found more useful and quicker, but it's great that they have the birds in the app to lookup as well.
