BOM Weather for Android
Gives you the weather info in a nice and clean interface. Info comes from bom which is fantastic. It would be nice if you can see the 24 hour forecast in one glance, rather than scrolling through. Also, you can't see historical weather data, say if you want to know how hot it got yesterday. I'm using aus weather and I'm getting all that functionality. I might just stick to it for those reasons. But great job here. Oh by the way the back button works for me. I'm using an S7.
Fairly nice app that could use some serious improvements. UI is way too large and spaced out. It works out for some but a choice of a more compact view would be suburb. As soon as I open the app, I want to be able to see the week's forecast in a glance. Radar is good. Hourly view is great, except again, it needs loads of scrolling, more compact, more better. That "connection problem" slide panel on the bottom is enraging. It needs to be dismissible, or at least should let you retry.
Great app generally, apart from the absence of a "glanceable" widget. Also found that forecast (as opposed to current) cyclone information isn't available through the weather warnings page, so I am back to the BOM site for that, even though it's something that potentially affected people are likely to want to monitor regularly. Would be great to be able to make a link to the cyclone forecast for a particular area (e.g. Coral Sea) in the main menu, as you can for weather in other locations. Thanks for a great app! ☺
There are 2 things missing from this app - I need to see UV levels to check if my kids need sunscreen before I take them outside. I used to have Weather Australia and it showed the UV colour coded - highlighted green for less than 3 etc., which was perfect. The other thing is please can we have a widget? The app is a bit slow to open so a widget showing at least current temp and UV would be awesome.
This app is excellent! Simple and functional, and easy to see all necessary weather information at a glance. I have two suggestions, which are the only two major things that're missing from the app's functionality: 1: Notifications. The app could send notifications or push notifications to the user when weather warnings (e.g a Severe Storm Warning) become active nearby. 2: Rotation. The ability for the app to rotate to match the orientation of the users' device. Currently it's stuck in portrait.
Good app but could do with an ability to show what the maximum temp was during the day, quicker to load (11 secs), easier to exit, and get rid of....."feels like...." because I can tell you 38C in Alice Springs does not feel like 33.5C. Unnecessary.
This is a gteat weather app, best one i have seen in a while. Although the one thing thats missing is a widget that would allow me to just look at my phone for a quick weather update. I know its a first world problem but with most apps offering widgets to compliment the app it is somthing l have become used to.
Great app, one issue that needs fixing is the Radar location. Launceston's radar map comes up with the southern end of the state :( It needs to show the northern end, that's where the rain fronts sweeping the state come from. Please fix. Keep having to look at Devonport's forecast for an accurate radar image for Launceston!
Awesome app, replaces a lot of links for my web browser, nice and simple - great with the quick link to the rain radar, don't know why other people are complaining about the radar in SA, have had plenty of rain over summer and has been great to see where the heaviest falls over Adelaide are. Doesn't consume too much memory either. Don't change it too much, great the way it is. Keep up the great work!
Clean interface lets you see the important details at one glance. One thing that is dearly missing is the ability persist the data after the internet is cut off. I frequently want to recall the weather without a connection and I can't. Also a tiny date above each day's weather would be fabulous. Overall the app is nice. Well done
It's an interesting and nicely laid out app, and great that it comes from the BOM itself. However as we are so used to weather being glanceable information on our phones the slow loading, splash screen and lack of a widget seems antiquated and means it won't replace my other weather apps just yet. Hope it improves in the future. I'll still just visit the BOM in my browser for more in-depth info and check out the updates if this app from time to time.
It's been getting difficult to find a good, reliable BOM sourced weather app recently since "Weather Australia" hasn't been updated for 3 years and had that month long outage late last year. Only gripes are opening speed, lack of Doppler or rainfall in the radar section, and no widget (still using "Aus Weather" for a good home screen widget). Well done though!
I like how it presents the information without clutter. But, the splash-screen should time-out quicker or be skippable, and the broken Back button is downright embarrassing (stern words to the Devs who thought it's a good idea, or the Test people who let that bug through). EDIT: they've updated the ap, and the Back button is still not fixed; it's just differently broken.
Can't rely on this app. On my phone (HTC One) I frequently get forecast temperatures that are a degree or two different to the BoM website for the same location. Compared this with another Android user whose app gave forecast temperatures that matched the website at the same time as mine gives incorrect temps.
Don't nornally care to write reviews but this app is the best weather app! Why settle for a 3rd Party App when you can get it straight from the horses mouth! Please, please make a widget to go along with this app! Also please make notifications for storm warnings! This would by far make this weather app completely comprehensive!
Yay! The BOM has a weather app now! Looking forward to taking a look around the app and learning all the features. I am tired of my current app providing incorrect info in my widget and not updating my location. I like to know in an instant on my home screen the time, current temperature and max for the day. Hopefully the BOM app will give me the accurate information I need. I know the app is still in its teething stages but once widgets are available I will be stoked!!
Has most of the information I want except current UV reading and sunrise and sunset times. However, there are many inefficiencies. - Takes up to 15 seconds to load. - Too much screen interaction just to see rain probability and the 7 day forecast. - Changing reference of the minimum and maximum temperatures of the day slows down reading. - Requires 2 well-timed presses of the back button to exit. BoM, please have a look at Funtopia's Weather Australia. It's fast, has more information but easy to read at a glance and makes good use of a single screen on a mobile phone. I would have stayed with it if it wasn't being retired.
Easy, clear and simple to use. Does everything I need, radar, rain and wind. Only thing that's not working for me is the automatic location but that's easy to add location to your favourite list. Well done BOM team
Best thing tax dollars are paying for. A rare brilliant govt app, good work by the team, gives you the right amount of info from 24 hrs till the end of week. Rain % and radar all in one display. Great effort!
Tells me we've had .2 mls since 9am, it's only 7.30am, have had 2.5 since 9am yesterday. Tells me temp -.8 when my thermometer says 4.8 and feels more like it. Weatherzone though not perfect appears to give a better approximation. Cannot find fire danger ratings. Detailed forecast runs off window and can't scroll to get lower part.
Basically all my gripes have been covered already in the comments already. The app itself is well developed. The 3 things I would like are 1. Widget 2. The 7day forecast to fit on the screen with having to scroll 3. The app starting screen stays there far too long or the app takes too long to load.
At last a app from BOM that gives me all the info I need for local and interstate weather. Easy to scroll through and save places ( besides Capital cities ) . Would be great if can enlarge radar maps on screen to obtain better viewing of areas and intensity of storms etc ; lightning tracker would be great Simple and functional app that is easy to use. It is a bit slow on opening; can only get better with all the feedback.
Slow to download due to unwanted radar data most of the time. Need a radar off option for the 5 months without rain here in SA over summer. The radar uses all my data, when it has no useful info.
The app is well designed and I like the functionality, but its consistently incorrect for my suburb, which is next to the CBD. It isn't updated enough maybe? I'm not sure why this is, as other weather apps are accurate. For instance it currently states it is 22.1C when it is easily 29C. If this flaw is fixed I will use it, but uninstalling for my old weather app.
Information is good but others have presented it better. Doesn't seemed to have a widget and thats a big failure. I use the widget to see if there is any need to open the full app so guess I'll go to Weatherzone instead..
1 point for trying. Seriously, this is terrible. The whole point of a good weather app is to get all the information you need with a single glance. Not only does this app not support widgets, every time it opens, even if switching back to the app from another program, the splash screen displays for long enough to eliminate any possible convenience this app would otherwise provide. Really really disappointed. :(
It does everything it needs to do. It has the tempurature, it tells me if it is going to rain, and what the weather may be like in the future. However, it also has a splash screen that goes for way longer than it needs to, good stuff is put behind things in a way that detracts from experience and overall it feels like it was designed by a project manager or a minister's child
Does that stupid splash screen need to waste 10 minutes of our time each day? Once a day for 2 seconds would suffice, no? Won't rotate. Every other app rotates.
If you can be bothered waiting for the app to load, the design is pretty good. The non-skippable splash screen is particularly user-hostile and so very, very long! It just completely rules out this app from being a useful way to quickly check the day's forecast.
The basics are there but improvement is needed. Particular focus should be on app loading speed, widgets and notifications. A dark theme wouldn't go amiss either. Since the previous best option, the Weather Australia app has gone dark the BoM really need to step it up to fill the gap.
Don't waste your time with this app. What a pathetic and pointless app. Before I uninstall it, let me tell you why it is tragic. On loading, you wait ages looking at a boring cloud/sky pic. It you last that long, you'll find almost nothing. What info is there often conflicts. No Widget, No synoptic. No UV forecast... No Animated previews... No dopler... No Records... No stats... No history... No Almanac. ... Nothing. Weather Zone Plus is the one you want to install. Don't bother with this joke of an app. It is amateur and embarrassing. Bum, you should be ashamed...
Too simplistic at the moment. No predicted wind direction for coming days is one thing that is needed. Weatherzone has become too bloated, with some info that is useless. If the BOM can find the happy middle ground, it will be perfect.
Nice clean app, but takes a bit to load. Also having all the information on one tab/screen when you only want to look quickly is a bit annoying. A lack of a widget is a big minus as is easily being able to switch between saved locations.
Mostly a useful app. It often has an annoying no data connection warning across the bottom quarter of screen that can't be dismissed. It more annoying because other data in the app shows that it updated seconds ago.
Great app, incorrect temperature. Firstly, I think it's great that the BOM has an app now. It's ad free and very well designed, however the temperature is always out, sometimes by a considerable amount. The app says that the temperature is currently 22.9°C whereas my outdoor thermometer reads 28.4°C. That's a difference of 5.5°C. I'm surprised by this because I've always trusted the BOM as my weather source but these days I'm finding that even Google is more accurate.
This app has taken the place of a heap of shortcuts to web pages that I had on my phone, and lesser weather apps. It is absolutely brilliant. I just wish that the Bureau had brought it out earlier, as I am using it so constantly these days that is now an integral part of my homepage. Well done BOM!!!
App is slow to open but once open is very easy to navigate and has good functionality. Only real bug I've found is that the back button does not work on Samsung S4, have to kill the app to exit and re-open if I want to continue using the app. EDIT. Update has fixed the back button issue, well done. Next the slow opening of the app would be good.
The app gives most of the important info (should really have some ocean info as well), but takes way too long to open and the back button not closing the app is unforgivable. Fix those issues and add some widgets and it might be worth 5 stars... Update, back button now works so I have added a star!
Start up time went from 10 seconds down to 5-6 seconds with the new 1.7 update. Still slow compared to pocket weather which opens in 1 second. Widgets would also be appreciated in your next major release.

Once the app is open, it's great, but it takes so long to actually load that you can't just have "a quick look" at the weather, and notably missing is a widget so you can view the current temp at a glance without having to open the app. For this reason I kept my other weather app but sadly that one is now discontinuing. PLEASE GIVE US A WIDGET FOR THIS APP!
