About Field Guide to Victorian Fauna

The animals found in the south eastern Australian State of Victoria are unique and diverse. Detailed descriptions of animals, maps of distribution, and endangered species status combine with stunning imagery and sounds to provide a valuable reference that can be used in urban, bush and coastal environments. The content has been developed by scientists at Museum Victoria, Australia’s largest public museum organisation.

The app holds descriptions of over 950 species encompassing birds, fishes, frogs, lizards, snakes, mammals, freshwater, terrestrial and marine invertebrates, spiders, and insects including butterflies. From animals found in rockpools, minibeasts in your garden, to wildlife you might see in the bush. We’ve put in a lot of species, but it’s still a fraction of the complete fauna of Victoria. Our scientists will continue to add additional species and refine descriptions over time.

This app is one of a suite of field guides for each state and territory, developed by Australia’s leading natural history museums.

If you have trouble either downloading the app or with the app crashing, please refer to our app support page (http://museumvictoria.com.au/discoverycentre/museum-victoria-apps/mv-field-guide-to-victoria-app/support/)

Easy to use, great photos and audio clips. Would be great if we could filter by region, this would make it even faster to identify something I've just spotted - but still serves its purpose, and we use it all the time!

K70%
by K####:

Great. Would be even better if it could use GPS to show likely species. And a map that could be clicked on for same. The ability to share a summary and/or image, or link to page in app would be welcome as well.

by U####:

Absolutely wonderful. As someone studying zoology this app is amazing.

I can't believe I just wasted 20 minutes of my life updating this app. I can't access any part of it as it crashes on opening. I had no problems with the earlier version on my Samsung Galaxy SIII. Very disappointing :(

T70%
by T####:

Very useful to identify fauna around Parks, however could be more discoverable for users browsing. Viewing based upon the likelihood of that species being present in the area based upon those maps would be useful. Size of app an issue, even with the subset of species available. Due to photos being included? Load one identifying image with app (for offline use), however make available any additional images to downlaod to devices.

I'm a park raager and I use this app all the time. only wish it was more comprehensive and i was able to sort by region

Truly an amazing app, even for its size; I only wish something like this would be created for North America.

Great description of birds and animals

T70%

Really good

T70%
by T####:

Only improvement I can think of would be to have the sub categories clickable instead of having to scroll through the other categories to find what I'm after.

Great little app for basic identification, I've found the bird call recordings particularly handy. It can be slow going as you search by species rather than area and I've never had a distribution map show.

T70%
by T####:

It's so great to be able to see an animal while out and about and be able to work out what it is and find out more about it.

T70%
by T####:

Amazing amount of species. Info, pics and call sounds are awesome. Highly recommended

Rather large but worth every megabyte. Not sure about the non venomous snakes, check with Brian Fry Qld Uni

This app is great! Very handy! Would be awesome if there was a tick box when you into a certain species to help keep track of new discovered species that youve found though

A really handy app. Can't wait for it to be expanded. Particularly enjoy having the sounds associated with some species.

Best app ever!

One small criticism, please ditch the annoying pop up and make sounds directly playable from the description. Also better integration between the apps in the suite would be great. Otherwise this is an awesome suite of apps, highly recommended.

Neat little guide to everything you could see in Victoria, used to work great, now doesn't run at all

Love the app, but also crashing on xperia p, 4.1.2 since the update. Happens when I press 'species' or 'groups' or try to update in the settings. Can search for species, but only the name of each animal appears. If I click on one it crashes. Look forward to it being fixed!

This used to be a cool app, but since the most recent update it crashes on opening using a Samsung G4 running Android 4.3 making it completely useless and a waste of expensive bandwidth. Don't download this version - wait for a fixed one.

Those getting crashes after update. Try uninstalling & doing a fresh install. Worked for me, though I'm still too scared to enter the settings menu ;) Problems before reinstall [Since the update, the app launched once then crashed in settings menu. Now it just crashes on launch, everytime. Please fix! I tried clearing cache & forced stop but no luck.]
