HemaExplorer | North America for Android
No updates since it was released with many bugs and issues that need to be addressed. Definitely not worth the money at this time!
Needs A LOT of work to get better. $20 down the drain so far
If I could give it a negative rating, I would. Complete waste of $$$ Uninstalled
I really wanted to love this map system, but even after following all the directions and youtube tutorials, downloading the map sections...anytime you are not connected the wifi the maps are completely useless. Anytime you attempt to zoom into any of the layers, it never sharpens the image and stays way too blurry to see anything. Also, there is not an option to download the maps to the SD card, so you eat up all the internal storage in a hurry. Doesn't seem like they bothered to put any effort into this.
I paid for this because they are a sponsor on an overland program I was watching, and they sell it as an offline mapping solution, but once off line you can zoom into the maps making them useless. I even tried selecting a specific area and downloading it, I still couldn't zoom in. I could have spent this money on a physical map and been happier.
I had high hopes for this app that was featured on eXpedtion Overland. As an overlander I was hoping to use the app for my adventures. I tried on 3 tablets. Motorola Xoom running Andriod 4.2. Great Tablet, rugged, long battery life and the best built in GPS of all my tablets. Samsung Galaxy running KitKat, Poor GPS and terrible battery life and the Xplore RangerX running Andriod 4.2, ruggedized tablet with Vehicle dock and real USB ports. The app only works on the worst tablet I have the Samsung. The previous version would at least install on the Xoom and RangerX but would not download maps. The latest version crashes after install during second intro screen. Huge disappointment. Contacted Hema support and they were of absolutely no help and very slow to respond. Asked for a refund, emails went unanswered. I think they are trying to push Android users to their overpriced Android tablet. Don't waste your money.
On Android unable to do route planning. Quality of the maps does not match other apps available on Android. No sure what all the hype is about this app.
Lots of crashes when opening this app and in the middle of recording tracks.
All sorts of strange things happen with this app and it struggles to do most things well or in an intelligible manner. Downloading maps is a mess, export does not work and it is clunky as hell. Gets 2 stars because it did track well and save. But since I now can't export my track it is pretty worthless. Hopefully Hema decides to live up to there reputation for other products and makes something of this. Don't purchase as is, V1.0
I was also excited to see the company and all the articles from Overland ExpoWest. But this needs some work. You can't even select imperial units! Everything is in meters and kilometers. Not even a search function. Really disappointed so far. Stick with GAIA maps and their app for now.
Metric only is a drag. US base maps constantly downloading. Once downloaded the app crashes and the process repeats. I'm hopeful that it'll get sorted soon but for the time being I'll be using something else.
Developer is unresponsive to concerns, here or on Facebook. For $20, they should be emailing me daily to ask me how it's going! Keeps downloading Hema US Roadmap. Why? Needs option for imperial units of measure. At $20, certainly not ready for prime time. It's been weeks since I paid and reviewed, and still no imperial units option? !
Downloaded this app for a 3 week trip through BC, YT, AK, NWT. The good: - Comes with a bunch of map layers you can prioritize - When you have a data connection, the layers refresh well but sometimes requires a zoom in/out to get it to go - Ability to download sections and specify the zoom in/detail level is nice - Topographical maps are detailed and show prominent landmarks like glaciers and mountains - Waypoint input is good. You can either enter the GPS coordinates directly or touch and drag around a little pointer. - Tracks distance/route The bad: - Can't download map sections onto an sd card (great to find out after I spend the money to get one specifically for this app). Since most tablets are limited in internal memory, this is a BIG down side. - Can't change units - Some map layers are not comprehensive - ex. the Dempster and Denali highways not shown on the street map and many, if not most, secondary highways up there. These secondary roads are even shown on Google maps. - Route navigation doesn't work with street layers and I'm not inputting a million waypoints Summary: - Use GAIA - Google maps + navigation offline - Not practical for use
No search function like the iOS version, several features inactive. This app seems to run the same engine as several well known and functioning apps. Hopefully they will continue to build on this platform and I didn't waste money. I've seen the Hema crew at Overland events and I was so excited for their North America software to release. I'm also unsure how to utilize the cloud features from within the app.
Doesn't seem to work in Canada yet, layer order isn't working, tries to re-download US maps over and over for Canada. Topo maps are out dated and have bad zoom levels. When zoomed in all the way map disappears.
This one is much better then others I have used. I have made 4 trips with this and have found that for tracking it works perfect on my older nexus tablet. On my samsung mega it would get lag behing up to 20 minutes after using it for 2 hours. The tablet with wifi only never got behind after 3 hours of travel. Did have to learn to go in the setting and turn off the resume down load of maps as it will always start downloading them if it is checked.
Still waiting on canada for download area. Excited to use it
So far a really good app. Had the app for a week/week n half. It is showing lots of tracks and easy to use. I like the ability to easily turn the layers on and off. Looking forward to putting it through its paces. Its a new app so it will be good to see whats to come :)

Best offroading map ever, has very detailed maps that you can track your location on the map while offline and out on the trail without having to use any data and record your route with tons of information. I love not ever having to go down a trail just to find that it is a dead end or leads nowhere. Worth the money.
