The Age App for Tablet for Android
Poor service as Android app has not been updated and fails regularly. Recent "parsing" issues have now been fixed after multiple complaints. I have reloaded it, triumph of hope over reality? But disinterested foreign based "support" Is incomprehensible and therefore ineffective. I speak 3 languages, you need good English speakers who listen and provide solutions rather than multiple identity checks by each person who is not able to fix the problem. Poor service is rampant rather than commitment to genuine service.
App greets me with a Parsing error message. Rang Fairfax (philippines call centre). That was a waste of time. I emptied the app cache and deleted app data. Deleted then re-installed the app. Logged in and there has been no error message so far. It's so clear now why Fairfax are on the way out. Customer service is clearly not central to this organization.
The app won't let me re-subscribe after a payment issue with my Google Play account, now resolved. Google say it is likely an app issue as all their suggestions to resolve it have not succeeded. Poor support fo
Been using this app since it was launched and never had a major problem with it. It's clean and simple to use. But the content is woeful. There used to be a fresh daily edition. Now stories hang around for days and others don't appear at all. They've pretty much abandoned this app.
No updates to the Android app for ever, no access to old editions or stories, ads that randomly overwrite things. If it is brown and smells I guess we know what it is. Much like all the age online services. Time to try The Australian.
The App has been good, but like another Reviewer, I'm now being locked out because apparently my subscription is no longer current. When I try to reinsert my log in details, the App freezes..... Grr.... very frustrating. Just to be clear ... it's the login page that is not working.
The app works then suddenly you have to log in again after months of use, then had to take app off and reinstall. Then just did it again but did not fix by reinstall so rang fairfax to get help. No help, said use the website age and then get back with fix. Answered that FAIRFAX DO NOT SUPPORT THE APP!!! It is their app but do not support. Subscription will be cancelled
Can no longer see / use the Super Quiz, hasn't been addresses in 3 weeks, and a lot of the content that is not available for my subscription level is freely available in the digital edition. I'm cancelling my subscription - terrible value for money, and the overall standard of this paper has dropped considerably since the paywall came into effect.
Don't bother downloading this app. Fairfax no longer support it and your digital subscription will no longer be accessible on this app. Your choice is to buy an iPad (urg) or use the website access. If you choose the latter, make sure you downgrade your subscription and save yourself a couple of dollars a week. For months we've been paying for an app we can't access because we don't own an iPad while we waited thinking they would fix the login issue. Nice of Fairfax to let us know. Geez, can't imagine why they're losing money...
No longer able to read quiz due to stupid advert. 3 days in a row now. Does no one at the age actually look at what they put up for all to read?
After working well for 18 months is now loading blank pages and is unusable. No reply from support after a week. Don't bother.
Any excellent newspaper. No problems with App on my Samsung Tablet. Used it for 3 years now @ $17.99 pcm instead of having paper home delivered. Do miss the supplements provided by advertisers though.
Also needs a refresh button to get new versions.
One of the reasons for getting the print edition is the crosswords. If the Android app does not include the puzzles then I'd have to seriously consider if the subscription is worthwhile. There are plenty of other newspapers online.
Fairfax thinks iOS is the only version worthy of full development.. Shame Fairfax as there are far more Android tablets and phones than Apples.. Wake up or lose subscribers..
I miss a lot of the news that I get on the website. I can't access the crossword and now it's not letting me login. Very frustrating. This was an issue in 2014. They fixed the login issue, but it's back after the latest update. Get your act together guys!
It might come as a surprise to senior management and the board of Fairfax but in 2016 the best publishers in the world are continually improving their digital publications..not sitting on their laurels .the Age android app is poor, slow and lacks any innovative features. Read other reviews for confirmstion of this and the appalling lack of tech support. If you want to see where the Age should b try the Washington Post, Quartz ...and where is Fairfax's android version of the Fin Review?
Its a great app when its working which is hard to predict as the pages go white often after only a few minutes reading....most frustrating! Fairfax media have tried a number of different fixes but no joy.
This app is essentially unusable. Difficult to discover content, browsing through takes too many taps and you have to jump through each section manually, potentially missing out on something interesting on a section you would not normally look in. The Herald Sun is currently testing out their brand new app, and its refined design is very easy to use, is discoverable, and loads a lot faster! Also it works on phones. Pity about the actual content though.
The age support desk have written to me that this app is no longer supported Very poor at offline content, regularly misses downloading of pages with no ability to force a refresh. Some days it download everything then just displays blank pages for the entire paper until the next day
Why is there an international transaction fee associated with the monthly subscription if this is an Australian newspaper? Considering cancelling because of this.
Reported some bugs including not being able to access certain content and was advised THIS APP IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED. Still being charged the same subscription nor is there any mention here that support has been stopped. Not even the courtesy of an email to advise. Not happy.
App works fine. My wife has an ipad and its version has the daily crossword. Why cant it be in the android version? Has been this way for years now. Come on fairfax, if you want people to go the digital path you do your bit.
12 months subscription only limted access to only read editors choice Custmer service from the Philippines non existent Surely Fairfax can rectify this anomaly! !!Xtrmly disappointed
App has not been updated in 2 years. Slow to refresh news, bugs when it comes to reading comments and just not many features.
Why arent images included in the download? Makes reading on my commute feel like Im missing something.
Very poor at offline content, regularly misses downloading of pages with no ability to force a refresh. Some days it download everything then just displays blank pages for the entire paper until the next day
Unable to do find the entertainment section that has the puzzles. It would be nice to have all the puzzles interactive like sudoku and the ability to save. Also a further fine addition would be the daily TV guide. It has improved greatly and is easier for novices too use.
Seriously, why else would someone fork out money for this, if not for the crosswords? But, while they're available on iOS, they're not on Android ... why? And why hasn't the app been updated in over a year? Definitely not going to be subscribing to this POC.
Updated to an android tablet and have been disappointed. Too much blue area on front and summary pages, and as a consequence the font is too small and can't be increased. Also, no crossword. I wrote to the Age and got a less than convincing reply; something like " sorry about the crossword but we ain't fixing it anytime soon". Bye bye subscription.
I used this app for years since it first came out. Now you have to subscribe, so it now sucks.
New paper every day??
I can't read the newspaper because it will not download in my device
The Age app for tablet? Adequate for my Samsung galaxy ANDROID tablet, but why is it not available for ANDROID smartphones? Have contacted ths Age several times and the only response is "we'll pass on your request to our technical team"! Come on Fairfax, get your act together and start looking afer your customers, after all ther are more ANDROID devices in Australia than those silly iPones!
Much improved in recent times
Unusable
Would be good to have a phone application
Freezes regularly & is very slow to load
Was enjoying this app & subscription until about a week ago the app has ceased recognising that my subscription is current. Contacted Fairfax and they said it's not their problem. Contacted google and they have indicated that all is well with my subscription. Only outlet is to post a poor review in the hopes that someone in the know will look into this problem. Fairfax finally acknowledged that the problem with the app and has rectified the issue. If only it wasn't so hard...

Fairfax have stopped supporting this app, but they only tell you that if you raise an issue. Dubious ethics to keep offering the app in the Play Store with no mention that it is unsupported. (And why not support the Android app when they are putting so much effort into revamping their iPad app?) My issue was with the daily "super quiz" feature, which has become barely usable. You may find the app is in some ways more convenient to use than the Age website, but don't count on it continuing to function.
