تأسست دنيا الوطن عام 2003 كأول صحيفة إلكترونية فلسطينية تهتم بالشأن الفلسطيني وتواكب الأحداث المحلية والعربية والعالمية.
استطاعت دنيا الوطن منذ نشأتها الوصول إلى الصدارة من خلال تركيزها على القضايا التي تهم القارئ الفلسطيني وإتاحتها مساحة من الرأي والتعبير الحر في وقت تراجعت فيه الصحف الورقية وعجزت وسائل الإعلام الرسمية عن مجاراة اهتمام القارئ.
ووفق لدراسة ألمانية أجراها الباحث البرشت هوفهاينز في العام 2006 صنفت دنيا الوطن واحدة من اهم المواقع العربية التي تلعب دورا في تعزيز الديموقراطية.
وبناء على النجاح الذي حققته دنيا الوطن في أن تصبح الموقع الفلسطيني الأول لعدة سنوات ، وسعت دنيا الوطن خططها لتشمل القارئ العربي واستطاعت الوصول إلى مراكز هامة ومتقدمة على عدد من الدول العربية مثل مصر والأردن والإمارات والسعودية والمغرب.
وفي العام 2008 قررت دنيا الوطن الانطلاق عربيا بتوسعة نشاطها لمواكبة الأحداث العربية والتركيز على القضايا التي تهم القارئ العربي واستطاعت استقطاب عدد قياسي من القراء والمتصفحين للموقع من خلال تغطيتها الصحفية لأهم الأحداث والقضايا التي تهم القارئ العربي.
وواصلت دنيا الوطن صعودها حتى تمكنت في مطلع العام 2013 من الإطاحة بالموقع الأكثر شهرة في العالم "فيس بوك" وتصدرت المركز الأول بلا منازع في فلسطين وفق العداد العالمي لقياس الزوار اليكسا واجتازت بذلك عددا من المواقع الهامة مثل جوجل ويوتيوب وياهوو وتويتر.
ووفقا لدراسة أجراها معهد تابع لجامعة أكسفورد البريطانية لقياس الآثار الاجتماعية للأنترنت صدرت حديثا في أغسطس 2013 صنفت دنيا الوطن كأول موقع في العالم يتخطى مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي في بلده.
وتعد دنيا الوطن من أوائل المواقع المستقلة التي فتحت باب المشاركة والحوار وإبداء الرأي أمام الجمهور من دون أي قيود ،كما تحرص دنيا الوطن على مد القارئ بكل روافد المعرفة والاطلاع من خلال تغطيتها الصحفية الجريئة والمؤثرة عبر المواد الصحفية والقصص الإخبارية والمواد التفاعلية والوسائط كالفيديوهات والصور وفتح باب التعليقات ومشاركات القراء على مختلف الموضوعات والأقسام في الموقع.
يذكر أن دنيا الوطن أطلقت في العام 2013 عددا من الصفحات المتخصصة التابعة لها عبر الشبكات الاجتماعية لتواكب تطور واهتمامات القارئ العربي فأنشأت صفحات إضافية لمتابعة الأخبار السياسية والفنية والرياضية ،وقد بلغ عدد مشتركي الصفحة الرئيسية الخاصة بدنيا الوطن على موقع الفيسبوك اكثر من 300 ألف مشترك.
