Dal ‘500 all’800 era in uso tra la famiglie più facoltose di Lucca possedere una dimora nella campagna fuori città dove passare la bella stagione tra i piaceri della vita agreste. In quasi quattro secoli, ricchi mercanti, nobili, politici di alto rango costruirono nella campagna lucchese alcune centinaia di ville creando un vero e proprio sistema paesaggistico dove la bellezza delle tenute signorili si associava rigorosamente nella cura attenta del territorio. Nel corso dei secoli sia i palazzi che i parchi di loro pertinenza vennero più volte trasformati secondo lo stile che di volta in volta si imponeva per mantenere il decoro dovuto al rango signorile dei proprietari. Ville in origine rinascimentali acquisirono così un’impronta decisamente barocca fino a diventare, in alcuni casi, veri e propri riferimenti neoclassici. Ad alcune ville, che si distinguono per ricchezza formale e valore storico, viene riconosciuto il titolo di monumentali.
