Kandinsky

Kandinsky is a great starting point for developing and sharing motion. This app operates as a notepad with a time dimension. It allows you to capture dynamics, rhythms and shapes through lines, upon a timeline or musical track that you upload. A ‘drawing’ can be saved, replayed and elaborated, as many times as you want.

The idea for this app was conceived by the Dutch choreographer David Middendorp, who wanted to create a tool for making new choreographies. He gives his dancers chorographical input by presenting the lines that he draws in the app, and allows them to interpret this input from their own physical language. For a dance teacher, Kandinsky can also substitute manual note making in preparing or teaching a dance class.

Kandinsky is a useful tool for not only dance, but also for many other purposes that involve motion. Some examples: a theater technician can use the app to make notes for the positioning of props, actors and lights during a play; a sports coach can use it to give directions to his students; a cook can use the app while creating a new recipe, and for kids it’s a fun and creative doodle toy.
