About Ypres
Ypres saw several major battles during the course of The Great War, including the Third Battle of Ypres, Passchendaele, when the land had turned into a quagmire making advancing extremely difficult. These battles saw hundreds of thousands dead on both sides of the conflict, leaving many more injured and fighting for their own lives. Ypres also saw what is widely considered to be as the first major us of gas in warfare, which took place on 22 April 1915.
This app is perfect for battlefield tourists and armchair historians alike, bringing the story of war to your mobile device, any time and any place you like. It provides an easily digestible insight into the Ypres battles and can be used to plan your tour of the Ypres battlefields or as a companion during your time walking the area. It has been developed in partnership with well known authors Major and Mrs Holt, whose titles including many renowned battlefield guides.
Each of these locations has been visited and studied extensively over many years by Major and Mrs Holt, well known for thier series of guide-books to the battlefields. All of these visits have been supported by extensive researching, covering the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Battles of Ypres. All locations include coloured pins to specify what they are, these locations are broken into four groups:
- Memorials (Yellow)
- Museums (Blue)
- Special Interest (White)
- War Cemeteries (Purple)
The user can also choose to just view the locations of interest which can then be further split up by their different tags so that the user can find a particular museum of interest for example.
This app contains a wealth of information, giving the story of how each of the battles unfolded and the impacts upon the battle from key people like General Haig. The app also includes battle maps, and the app as a whole can be viewed by the selected battle, an assortment of them, or by all battles depending on the preference of the user. These battle maps also include the movement of the lines during battle, and allow the user to get snippets of information for areas on the map.
